Quay Global Investors has taken out two of the top gongs in the funds management industry, winning Investment Manager of the Year (International Listed Property) at the Financial Standard Investment Leadership Awards and – for the fourth year in a row – being named the Money Management Fund Manager of the Year in the Global Property Securities category.

Quay is a boutique investment manager focused on the preservation and creation of wealth through innovative strategies in real estate securities. It was established in May 2015 as a partnership with principals Justin Blaess and Chris Bedingfield, and Bennelong Funds Management.

Mr Blaess said the awards are recognition of the team’s disciplined approach to investing and their focus on risk management, which stood them in strong stead during 2020.

“The past 12 months have been a very challenging time for investment markets. We came into the period from a strong position and were able to utilise our in-depth research process to rotate towards those sectors and stocks that were seen as most COVID exposed. This meant that when the announcement of the vaccine occurred we not only locked in our relative gains made during the pandemic, but added to them in the period since.

“Global listed real estate continues to be an attractive option for investors to benefit from long term real estate-like returns that actually outperform global equities over the long term and with lower risk. Because land is a store of wealth and doesn’t suffer the same level of obsolesce and or creative destruction as general equities, it tends to outperform the broader global equities market,” he said.

The judging methodology for Money Management’s Fund Manager of the Year 2021 consists of three main stages – a quantitative screening, a qualitative evaluation and a scoring system to evaluate the final results. It combines FE fundinfo’s quantitative fund data with the expertise of recognised research partners. For the Financial Standard awards, Rainmaker Information developed a quantitative methodology that equally weights performance factors (over a total period of six years) with five different risk measures.
